Orange - Year 1
Autumn 2 Newsletter
Welcome back to Autumn 2!
We hope you all had a wonderful break. We also just wanted to say how lovely it was to see you all at parents' evening and a big thank you for all of your work at home to support your child with their learning.
As always, please do not hesitate to let us know if you have any concerns or questions.
Best wishes,
Mrs O'Mahony-Leach, Mrs Moran and Mrs Rothwell
In Maths this half-term, we will be continuing to explore addition and subtraction. We will also look at 2D and 3D shapes.
In English, our key text is, 'The Jolly Postman by Janet and Allan Ahlberg'. We will be exploring lots of characters from the text and writing letters. We even have two very special guests in the classroom this term (one is a black and white cat!).
An Orange class post office has popped up for all of our Christmas letters. We will be walking to our local postbox to send our special letters!
The Year 1 long term plan details all of our key texts and learning across this term (you can find it at the bottom of this page).
This half-term, P.E. will continue to be on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Please can children come to school wearing their P.E. kits.
Due to health and safety regulations, all earrings, watches and jewellery must be removed prior to the school day for PE sessions.
Reading
Thank you so much for reading with your child throughout the week. Finding 5 or 10 minutes, four days a week to read your child's phonic book with them supports their reading and writing immensely.
Please ensure reading records are signed and that reading books and records are brought to school every day.
Outdoor Activities
Orange class loved their outdoor adventure activities. We spent time looking for signs of Autumn, collecting materials to create nature pictures and told woodland stories! Look at our gallery to see more!

Welcome to Orange Class!
We hope you had a restful summer. We're so excited to welcome you all to Orange class and start our learning together.
Thank you so much for your ongoing support, and we look forward to working with you all this year.
If you have any queries about any part of your child's learning, please do reach out to us.
Best wishes
Mrs O'Mahony-Leach, Mrs Moran and Mrs Rothwell
In Maths this term we will be focusing on Place Value (within 10). Securing their number bonds to 10 will greatly support your child's learning. Children will be counting objects, comparing by groups and counting one more and less. We will be using number lines, 100 squares, place value grids to support their learning. We will also start to explore addition and subtraction and use part-whole models to aid their learning.
In English we will be using the classic picture book, 'Where the Wild things are' by Maurice Sendak to create our own story and to write a set of instructions. Later this term, we will use the poetry book, 'A Dinosaur at the bus stop' to explore a range of poems.
Please also refer to the Year 1 Orange curriculum overviews for each subject if you wish to see what your child will be learning this year. These can be found on this website under the 'Curriculum' tab. We have also included the long term plan for this year, below.
P.E. is on a Tuesday and Wednesday this term.
On Tuesday, children need to wear suitable clothing for outdoor activities including waterproof pieces and wellies. On Wednesday, it will be indoor P.E. We are very fortunate that Stockport County are kindly providing PE kits for all children at St Mary's this year. These will be distributed by the end of next week.
Due to health and safety regulations, all earrings, watches and jewellery must be removed prior to the school day for PE sessions.
Reading
We ask that you find 5 or 10 minutes, four days a week to read you child's phonic book with them. They need these four reads so that they can build fluency, develop comprehension and experience success.
Please ensure reading records are signed and that reading books and records are brought to school every day. We are very fortunate to have some volunteers who regularly come in to read with the children.
