Eco Schools
Welcome to this year's Eco page. Our new Eco council has been meeting, carrying out an environmental review, writing an action plan and presenting their action plan to the whole school. They have a busy year of activities for the whole school to be involved in, all making St Mary's greener and with a smaller carbon footprint. You can read our action plan at the bottom of this page.
Autumn Term
In the Autumn term, we started to look at our first two topics; travel and energy. We took part in Eco School's 'Cut your carbon' challenge with everybody trying to find a way to cut their carbon at home. The challenges ranged from playing more board games to eating more meat-free meals. Well done to everyone who completed their challenges. As part of our travel topic, the Eco council asked for scooter training to encourage more sustainable travel. It was a great success. Everyone enjoyed learning new skills, and we are now hoping to see many more children 'scoot to school!'
Spring Term
At the start of the Spring term, we started to create a lovely nature area for children and for wildlife. Mrs Bradley and Mrs Moran have been helping the Eco council to lead on creating a pond, a growing area and a bee and bug hotel. Everyone is enjoying sitting in this quiet, calm space, and we are proud to be encouraging and supporting wildlife at our school.
We also attended the Stockport Hydro presentation to receive a grant that the Eco Council had applied for. The members of the Hydro have an environmental fund which they use to support groups across Stockport. We have bought a water butt and two composters for our school garden.
Finally, the Eco council organised a 'scoot to school' morning to encourage more sustainable travel and keep our school street safe. We had a great turn out. Next year we may need to look at adding more scooter parking at our school!
